2. The Graduate

Last week we watched a film called The Graduate, which tells a story about a adolcent boy and the struggles that he had the transition between childhood and adulthood. As we mentioned in class today, Ben , the main character has some issues with his family and future. However I want to mention some scenes, which I found it interesting while I was watching the movie. The first scene of the film starts with a party after the short conversation between Ben and his father. Ben's parents organized a party to celebrate Ben's gratuation, however the weird part is all the guests were Ben's parents friends. So it might be said that here we have contradiction. Otherwise if this is Ben's celebration than why Ben had to hang out with old aged people, that he could not share and talk anythink. In addition this also might be the evidence of the desire of the parents to show of. In this scene it can be easily said, that these parents wants to show their succes through their son rather than be proud with the Ben's own succes- the graduation-. Apart from this scene, we can see that Mr. Braddock forces his son to decide his future. In order to communicate softly, forcing and not listening unfortunatly may lead adolcents to wrong ways, as we can see in the movie, exemplified with an affair.

  1. "old aged people" :-D ...perhaps "older people"!?! :))

Yes, that is certainly a contradiction worth pointing out. Ben's parents are desperate to project the image of their success at all times. They have 'achieved' the American Dream, whereas Ben's generation is already starting to question these values. Don't forget from Tough Guise that the 1960s were a time of significant social movements which upset traditional values.

don't forget the spelling of 'adolescents'...
