Unfortunetly for years women have the obligation of being soigne. Otherwise even women criticize each other including men. Lets assume that you go outside without clothing elaborate, probably you'll be marked as ragged, in other situation you would be marked as being too attractive. It seems that women have no way out but being marked. The reason of being marked may be relate to the position of women in the society in all cultures. In contrast to all feminist speech,even today women have not enough freedom to wear what they want. Ofcourse they have, however they have to accept being marked. It is really necessary to question why women have to be elaborate but men don't. Unfortunatly media also stir up this situation with commercials. Represent women as an object with parfume bottles is also a way of marking women. However men have no situation like this unless dressing in a very exaggerated way. When a men wear a jean and a violet sweater it doesn't occur a problem, however when women do that, they are being marked as clothing too attractive or too colourful or too elaborate. In every situation women are marked for something. The question is, do women have borned marked or society and media bring the concept 'marked women'. It really seems imposible for women to being unmarked because we had never been unmarked.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting post, and I think you are absolutely correct to relate the concept of being marked to the historical status of women in society.
Actually I used the word soigne in terms of women, who care themselves and be preaperad with their clothes and make up. I looked up in the online dictionary but it might be wrong ofcourse. Thank you for your correction =)
